CLEANING AND REORGANIZING YOUR FRIDGE IS A GREAT FIRST STEP FOR YOUR RESET
Mar 28
Whether you need a total reset or just looking to jump start better eating habits, tackling the fridge should take no longer than an hour of your time and can be an immense first step in healthy eating.
Here is what I tell my clients:
· Take everything out and throw away items that have an expiration date longer than a month or two.
· Clean your shelves with diluted distilled white vinegar (dilute with hot water) and add a fragrance such as lemon or citrus essential oil for a clean, fresh smell, although the fragrance is certainly not necessary.
· If you don’t use a special vegetable container (we like Rubbermaid’s Freshworks brand, found here) – you can line your vegetable drawer with paper towels, as moisture in the fridge is what causes most fruit and veggies to lose their crisp texture and start to soften and go bad. Add a paper towel on top as well. BTW, I don’t put my fruits and veggies in the drawers below, as I find if they are in immediate sight when I open up the refrigerator door, it will remind me what I’m supposed to be eating.
· Part ways (no crying allowed) with non-healthy items such as bottled juices that contain sugar, whole milk, fatty mayo (too many great alternatives), margarine, ketchup containing high fructose corn syrup (buy the natural kind), and anything considered processed food.
· Take the time to wash and cut up all your veggies, as making it easy to grab and use are keys to fresh salads or healthy snacking when you get the urge.
· Keep those condiments easy to get to. Adding flavor (condiments and spices) to your dishes will make healthy foods a lot more delicious. Many people I know think eating healthy is bland, but that certainly is not the case.
You will find when the healthy foods are right in front of your eyes, you will be reminded to grab it, versus cookies, ice cream, etc. Keep it up for a month and you might just make it a lifelong habit.
